North Caicos & Middle Caicos

Tues, April 8, 2014 –

Sara’s sister Kathy and Brad arrived for a week of thawing out from a long New Hampshire winter.  The plan was to show them a bit of Provo then take off for some sailing around the islands.  Again a front was coming through.

The fronts this year have been arriving about every 6 days and this was right on schedule and, as usual, from the east.  The sailing, and more so, the anchoring challenge in the T&Cs is finding a spot with protection from the winds and seas overnight.  Since we wanted the the sailing time for Kathy and Brad to be calmer, we went with Plan B for the following day.  We took a ferry from the eastern end of Provo to North Caicos and rented a car to drive that Cay along with Middle Caicos.  bIMG_1883Again, seven years ago we had heard about the development that was taking place on North Caicos.  What we saw was several very large projects that were started and abandoned.  Unfortunately they created a few short term jobs, but no long term opportunities for the local population.  Having been stopped mid-stream, they are now becoming delapidated and an eye sore.

The water in the T&Cs is the most beautiful we have experienced.  It is a perfect clear turquoise with shades of aqua changing with the depth of the water.  Dark spots are a red flag on the beautiful water, signaling coral heads that must be avoided.

We left Friday morning and sailed to French Cay where we spent the night.  We had hoped to do some snorkeling at French Cay, but the seas were too rough so we did swim and all got in some reading.  The boat rocked all night so we left earlier than planned and motored back north to Sapodilla Bay.
