Aground!

bIMG_1401A grade school friend of Bob’s and his wife, Bob and Alissa, arrived about noon and we sailed to St. Michael’s.  Winds were excellent and we had the boat at 8.5 kts.  For the final five miles into St. Michael’s which was directly upwind, the narrow channels, with their ninety degree turns, lined up exactly with our tacking angles, and we wasted no time getting in.  Alissa, the non sailor in the group, assumed this was all normal.  Bob would say the odds of everything lining up like that are one in a thousand.   We were thrilled that the boat handled so well!  We anchored just inside the inlet at St. Michael’s in 9′ of water.

Mon, Oct 7-

It rained all day, so we put on our foul weather gear and went to shore to explore St. Michael’s.  Had lunch at a crab place.  The staff warned us that due to the storm the tide would be about 2.5′ above normal.  After walking around town we returned to the dinghy at the restaurant.  bIMG_1389The restaurant had flooded and closed.  The flooding was bad enough that the parking lot had turned into a moat around the restaurant.  We had to wade through gross water to get to the dinghy.

Tues, Oct 8-

We awoke to being aground.  The boat had turned around in the current and found a shallow spot.  The two Bobs spent an hour trying to get us free.
They put an extra anchor out to kedge off.  Bob K also rode around the boat in the dinghy to create waves, hoping they would lift the boat free.  No luck.  We needed to wait for high tide.  In the meantime we had a couple on shore, sitting on a bench drinking their morning coffee, totally entertained by our activity.  It rained all day.  At 5 pm we again worked to kedge off.  This time it worked.  We moved the boat to deeper water and spent the night.  While we did our evening kedging activity the same couple reappeared, this time with cocktails.
