Ciutadella, at the opposite end of the island of Menorca is more Spanish in feel. It was originally the capital of Menorca until the British moved the capital to Mahon. We enjoyed a day of land touring in a old beat up rental car–of which the only redeeming quality was the convertible roof. We toured Ciutadella and the charming fishing village of Fornells on the north coast, a harbor with excellent protection. Outside the major towns the island is largely farmland, the fields marked by tall, free standing stone walls. They add tremendous character to the already beautiful landscape. The grass is a bright green similar to Ireland. The large cow population supports the production of Manorcan cheese, a major industry for the island. The cheese is sold all over Spain. Additional industries include leather shoes and boat building (Minorcan Yachts).
Sara and Bob- I just now marathoned through the last 3 months of blog and LOVED it. The storms, the pizza, the descriptions of mussels…. But now I am concerned that you disappeared almost a month ago. The detail I love the most about your entries are the titles. Clever and concisely descriptive. I presume you are now back in Barcelona.
Time to make plans to come visit.
