Menton

Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10 – 11, 2014 –

bbIMG_5114We arrived in Menton, our last port on the French Riviera.  It is only 700 yards from the Italian border and Menton feels very Italian with lots of pizza restaurants and gelato.  The border between the two countries really looks like a border–a huge break in the rock.  That should have made the early cartographer’s job easy!

Menton is another wonderful hill town of winding narrow streets, outdoor cafes, and very old architecture.  It is known for its lemons and all kinds of lemon products, from lemon marmalade to lemoncello and even lemon perfume.  Based on its location, tucked into the northeast corner of the Med, Menton enjoys a favorable microclimate.  Winters here are the mildest of any place in France.

bbIMG_5111On Saturday, after a few boat projects, provisioning and rechecking the weather forecast, we will head back into the old town of Menton for more exploring and visit the old cathedral on the hillside.  Tonight we leave the coast of mainland France for an overnight sail to Corsica.  Au revoir to the Cote d’Azur and French Riviera.
